We don't know how to measure what we care about, so we care about what we measure.
INTRODUCING

PURPOSEFUL TECHNOLOGY USEAGE

There's a lot of nonsense online about unplugging, digital detoxing, and digital minimalism. You have authors and pundits making a killing by telling you to remove yourself from the world of technology, but they never really understand how impossible it is. For me, surrendering to technology happened in two stages. The first was in 2008 when I woke up 100lbs overweight, drug-addicted, and a mess at 40 years old. The second major stage was at 48 when I met my husband and had to rethink everything about being connected with someone else and what that means.
FINDING ME
2008-2018
From 2008 to 2018, my life underwent a remarkable transformation. I went from being an unemployed tech genius, overweight, smoking two packs a day, and on antidepressants for over two decades, to becoming a published author with my own TV show. I am now happily married and traveling the world, speaking about the purposeful use of technology.

FINDING ME

My journey began in 2008 when I pondered a question that would shape the way I lived my life - "Why do my devices know more about me than I do?" It was clear to me that the technology I was using could provide valuable insights about my life, but first, I needed to gather and organize this information in a meaningful way.

FINDING ME

My journey began in 2008 when I pondered a question that would shape the way I lived my life - "Why do my devices know more about me than I do?" It was clear to me that the technology I was using could provide valuable insights about my life, but first, I needed to gather and organize this information in a meaningful way.
COLLECTING & STORING PERSONAL DATA

A Methodology For Technology Use

During the period of 2008 to 2018, I developed a system for collecting and organizing information about my behavior using technology. After being shaped by technology for almost 20 years, it was time for me to shape it in return. To accomplish this, I needed a methodology to collect, organize, and visualize all the data in my life.
STEP ONE: FRAMEWORK
Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a well-known and widely used framework for understanding human motivation and needs. It provides a clear and concise way to categorize and prioritize different aspects of life based on their importance and impact on overall well-being. Using this framework helped me to better understand which areas of my life were most essential to focus on and which ones needed more attention. Additionally, it allowed me to organize my data and technology tools in a more meaningful way based on the needs they were addressing.
STEP 2: MAPPING
By mapping these technologies onto the different domains of Maslow's hierarchy, I was able to see which technologies were most important to me at different points in my life and how they were helping me achieve my goals. For example, during the data phase, I focused on social media and entertainment applications, while during the wisdom phase, I was more concerned with applications that promoted self-love and spiritual growth. This mapping also helped me identify areas where I was lacking in technology support and could seek out new solutions to meet my needs.
STEP 3: DEPLOYEMENT
During the period of 2008 to 2018, I used the DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom) framework to take a slow and deliberate approach to examine different aspects of my life. I broke down my life into four growth domains, starting with data in 2008-2010, then moving to information in 2010-2012, followed by knowledge in 2012-2014 and finally wisdom in 2014-2016.
By using this framework, I was able to prioritize my data and information collection efforts and categorize the different applications, devices, sensors, and services I used into these four growth domains. This allowed me to analyze and understand different aspects of my life and make better-informed decisions.
AUTOMATING CHANGE

Beyond Data Collection

Collecting and organizing data is merely the initial phase in enhancing your life through better technology. To fully optimize this process, there are three crucial steps to follow: Visualize, Automate, and Experience. By mastering these elements, you can unlock the true potential of a data-driven lifestyle.
VISUALIZE
Move your collected data to Google Calendar, creating micro-appointments color-coded by life area, which allows you to quickly spot patterns or trends. This approach makes your life searchable as events unfold, providing a clear, visual representation of your daily activities and experiences. By leveraging the power of Google Calendar, you can gain valuable insights into your life's rhythm and make informed decisions accordingly.
AUTOMATE
Utilize tools like Yahoo Pipes and Zapier to create workflows that seamlessly move data from various devices to ambient feedback platforms, such as wearables and IoT systems. This automation not only streamlines the data collection process but also ensures that you receive timely and relevant insights to support your daily life.
EXPERIENCE
  1. Wearable Devices and IoT: Incorporate wearable devices (like fitness trackers or smartwatches) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices (like smart home systems) into your daily life to provide real-time feedback and support for your habits and routines. These devices can help create a more seamless integration between your data and everyday experiences.

2018-2022

FROM ME TO WE

By 2016, I had undergone such profound transformation that I hardly recognized myself - mind, body, and spirit. I had spent my life surrounded by partners and friends who didn't understand where I was coming from or what mattered most to me. All that changed when I met my husband, and suddenly I had to think about creating a system that wasn't just about prioritizing my life, but about building a legacy of values that would truly last.
2018 - 2022

VALUING US

Building this new system required me to move beyond Maslow's hierarchy of needs and find a set of standards that my new family could agree on. We ultimately settled on values, as they are more stable and don't change from day to day or year to year like priorities or goals. Values are more generational and persist until a major life change.
ANTICIPATING HARD TIMES

RESILENCY

I've found that resilience is often talked about, but practical advice on how to design your life to cultivate it can be hard to come by. As I developed my own resilience-building system, I realized that I needed to find ways to trigger events that would impact my life beyond the current priority. That's when I discovered "The Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory," which helped me understand how to organize my values in a pyramid of growth, much like a new Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.

MY VALUES

When we think of values, we probably think of words or ways of behaving. We probably don't think of technology. Yet technology is core to how you show, grow, and use your values. Below are my six value areas and some of the tools, tips, and systems I have developed to make life safer, more comfortable, kinder, and loving.
Health
Caring for your mind, body, and soul with technology from the heart.
Home
Home can be a place, person, or feeling. Explore technology, strategies, and tips to design a home for love.
Family
More than who you're related to family are the people that keep you feeling safe.
Work
Making your work life, your lifes work.
